This play is a play within a play.
As Lemml wished, The God of Vengeance reaches new audiences in a new era through a new play: Indecent.
The God of Vengeance tells the story of love between women at a time when such love was taboo. Indecent expands from that story, exploring homophobia, the Holocaust, immigration, poverty, and the passionate journey of Lemml, who is captivated by the play and devotes himself to producing and protecting it. It follows the process through which a once-condemned play is given new life and performed again.
I began by asking myself what this play means to me.
To me, this is a story that continues amid collapse. It is a story of those who suffered because they lived ahead of their time, and whose stories later became a foundation for what can now be seen, spoken, and accepted more openly.
It reflects the wandering lives of Jewish immigrants, and also the strength of Jewish survival—a culture and people that endured and continue to influence the world today. It also reflects the history of queer culture: once persecuted and pushed to the margins, but now increasingly visible, powerful, and central.
History repeats itself.
What has collapsed is built again.
Just as David restored the fallen tabernacle, they—and we—will continue to raise it again from its ruins.
